Dear Friend of the Long Beach Unified School District:

I’m writing to ask for your help with a College Promise initiative being implemented through Long Beach CaLL (Career-Linked Learning), a nonprofit organization that connects Long Beach students to work experiences. CaLL is looking for businesses that can provide those experiences. Examples include participating as a guest speaker or in a career fair, hosting a workplace tour or providing job shadow or mentoring experiences for students or teachers.

CaLL also facilitates a summer program that provides internships for Long Beach students.  Internships are typically 120 hours, with placements beginning in June 2017 and ending in August.  They are beneficial for both the student and your business.  A student in your workplace can bring new ideas and technologies to invigorate existing staff, helps alleviate your workload, and can connect you to additional markets.  You would provide them with the experience of a “real job” and the ability to practice the skills they learn in school.

The majority of students will be LBUSD high school juniors and seniors.  CaLL will also place a limited number of college students.  All will be pre-screened by CaLL: they will have submitted resumes and recommendation letters and been carefully selected for placements, based on high scores in interviews.  They will also receive pre-placement training in important work-readiness skills.

Internships provide great benefits to students and the future workforce. Interns can apply skills and information learned in school in a real-world venue, learn technical, professional and interpersonal skills, and, when appropriate, earn money and references for college applications and future jobs.

Internships provide great benefits for business partners as well, including:

  • Available source of temporary employees
  • Opportunity to select from students who have become familiar with industry practices through specialized high school programs
  • Opportunity to orient students to corporate culture, nurture the relationship through college, and hire them work-ready
  • Contribute to public school education and to the creation of a motivated, educated workforce

Please join me in making a difference in the lives of Long Beach’s young people.  These students will be the next generation of leaders of our business community. We need your commitment, creativity and energy to make sure they are prepared. CaLL will support you every step of the way with resources, training and visits to your workplace that will ensure that you are equipped to successfully host your intern.  Please see the attached document, which outlines how easy the process of hiring an intern really is.

If you are interested, please call or email me at (562) 997-8291 or  If it makes sense for me to work with someone in your Human Resources department, a name is all I need.  Questions?  Please feel free to contact me for answers.

Thanks in advance for your support of the College Promise work based learning program.
